Test program for dual-mode phones

Knowledge is power. Dual-mode handsets, combining WiFi and cellular capabilities, are becoming more and more popular (see story #5), so inquiring minds want to know more about them. The Wi-Fi Alliance and CTIA have now joined forces to offer carriers a new source of data on these handsets. The two organizations have developed a testing program for WiFi/cellular phones which offers RF performance mapping in a converged environment. The testing program provides detailed measurements on key parameters, among them: transmitting power, receiving sensitivity, emitted power, and desensitization in the dual-mode environment. Note that not just any device will be allowed into the program. To complete the testing, a device must be WiFi certified for core WiFi interoperability, and CTIA certified for core cellular performance.

This initiative by the two associations will add fuel to the drive toward the adoption of fixed/mobile convergence technology by offering carriers (and, presumably, interested individual customers) with independent data on the performance of WiFi-cellular devices. The data will be collected from tests conducted in independent laboratories, which will be authorized and recognized by both organizations.
